Don Bries first picked up a hammer to join a construction crew 30 years ago this
summer. He grew up in Luxemburg, and learned about building foundations, squaring corners and finishing drywall from the Nick
and Ron Rausch crew.
In the three decades that followed, Bries honed
his skill with builder Eldon Swisher of Garnavillo, and in 1987, started his own company. He has built homes and businesses
in and around Guttenberg for the past 20 years. His cornerstone projects have included the Fidelty Bank and Trust building
in Guttenberg, the Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Homes of Guttenberg and Garnavillo, and many executive and classic Log Homes in the
tri-state region.
Now, while he isn't trading in his nail
gun, the construction manager is learning to point and click in a whole new way as he and his wife, Deb, take over Village
Custom Homes from Jim and Becky Moser.
The
business transaction was final in May. Today, Bries finds himself running architectural design plans on the computer and memorizing
purchasing policies as prospective homeowners knock on his office door. Currently, he is meeting customers located at 28461
Hwy 52 in Guttenberg.
Deb serves as office manager. The two have
purchased land 1/2 mile north of Guttenberg near the water tower and erected an All-American model home this summer.
